The Committee of St Helens Town AFC have agreed to manager Alex Wright's request for a leave of absence from running first team affairs. Assistant manager John Fletcher will take over the day to day running of the team with immediate effect. Alex's statment reads;

I've decided to step down as 1st Team Manager for the time being. It may be for only for a few weeks but right now I need a break. I feel that all the problems behind the scenes have somewhat distracted me from my role of running the team. I care immensely about the club which is why I've got involved in areas not directly linked with running the team. I feel that the long term future of the club is much more positive right now and financially we are in a better position then we were a few months ago. This is mainly due to the help of our sponsors 438 Design and some income from our recent FA Cup run.
I feel that I've lost a bit of enthusiasm and sometimes that comes across to the Team. I feel very flat indeed and I desperately need to take time out, spend a bit of time with my family and recharge my batteries. I don't feel that I'm doing the club justice as 1st Team Manager at present and that my Assistant John Fletcher should take over the team. Fletch and I have always had a good working relationship and we've agreed that when the time is right, I will return to deal with 1st Team affairs. Fletch and I have always shared responsibilities in the dressing room and we feel that neither of us will be called 1st Team Manager when I return. We will continue sharing responsibilities but both be known as 1st Team Coaches.

St. Helens Town Press Release

In response to the statement made by Sporting Club St. Helens on Wednesday 1 August St. Helens Town would like to take an opportunity to respond to the comments made and to provide clarification on a number of issues where the statement has been inaccurate and engendered confusion.       There is no doubt that a number of issues raised by David Conn’s article in The Guardian on Wednesday 1 August have been of some irritation and embarrassment to Sporting Club St. Helens and St. Helens Rugby League Football Club, along with their supporters.  Whilst the timing of the publication may have appeared to have been contrived, St. Helens Town state that the article arose as a natural consequence of the impasse reached in correspondence with St. Helens Rugby League Club during the week building up to the Challenge Cup semi-final.  It was also the culmination of various and strenuous attempts on the part of Town over the past year to amicably and constructively resolve differences between the two organisations.   On Monday 23 July 2007 St. Helens Town had sought clarification on issues around the new stadium development, the club’s current financial position and the difficulties encountered with regards to scheduling fixtures at the start of the football season.  The reply from Saints focussed on Town’s financial position and claimed a figure of £4698.14 as an alleged outstanding loan covering a period of the previous two football seasons, for which payment was required within 30 days.  This was along with a request that St. Helens Town provide monies to cover the costs of matchday expenses prior to each home game.  The response also stated clearly that the club reserved the right to recover any monies loaned to St. Helens Town during its time at Knowsley Road. Incidentally, there was no attempt made at all to answer the questions raised by St. Helens Town relating to it’s future use of the stadium. This fundamental issue was simply ignored. As Sporting Club St. Helens stated, there are legal agreements in place between Sporting Club St. Helens, St. Helens Rugby League and St. Helens Town.  However the suggestion that Sporting Club St. Helens’ ‘acquisition’ of St. Helens Town’s former Hoghton Road home was at a ‘face value’ of £150,000 is not reflected in either the St. Helens Town or Sporting Club St. Helens accounts of the period.  Sporting Club St. Helens’ claim that St. Helens Town was ‘effectively insolvent’ at this time is similarly utterly without foundation. Further the claim by Sporting Club St. Helens that the ‘acquisition’ of Hoghton Road ‘was in sole consideration for the soccer club playing rent free at Knowsley Road’ is not borne out by a reading of the agreement in question. There were other obligations spelt out in that agreement which have not been honoured, even though in return an asset of great value was handed over, and for which there has not been proper moral or contractual reciprocation.           It is a simple fact that the Hoghton Road ground realised £575,000 courtesy of the sale to Barratt Homes and this is clearly represented in the accounts of St. Helens Rugby League Club.  It is also evident is that a legal charge was placed on the Hoghton Road ground prior to the sale to Barratt Homes which secured the repayment of £420,000 of monies that were owed to a St. Helens Rugby League Club director and his company.   The alleged outstanding ‘loan’ balance of £4698.14, which St. Helens Town have continually contested, is derived from a loan agreement arranged between Sporting Club St. Helens and St. Helens Town at the start of the 2005-06 season.  As Sporting Club St. Helens indicated in their statement, discussions had taken place with regard to St. Helens Town becoming increasingly self-financing and to this end it was agreed in principle that any future monies used by St. Helens Town to support player related expenses only would have to be repaid.  The on-going loan agreement of September 2005 is specific in detailing the terms of the loan and St. Helens Town have supporting documentation which confirms the restrictions on the understood liability for both Sporting Club St. Helens and St. Helens Town.  Subsequently, items which have appeared on the St. Helens Town ‘loan statement’ provided by Sporting Club St. Helens have included monies, which according to the wording of the agreement, should not have been attributed to St. Helens Town.  As a consequence of these actions by Sporting Club St. Helens, it is easy to surmise that St. Helens Town is in a state of financial meltdown.  Whilst we may not have the money to make us promotion contenders, the club is working hard to develop commercial contacts alongside our new main sponsors 438 Design who have been extremely supportive throughout.

St. Helens Town have requested a meeting with Sporting Club St. Helens prior to and since the article in The Guardian.  Unfortunately, this reasonable request continues to be declined without reason despite the great efforts of the MP David Watts to arrange the meeting as a neutral third-party wishing merely to see this divisive dispute brought to an end for the benefit of two sports that undoubtedly benefit the community of St Helens and beyond.

Double delight for Town

In a week when Saints and their partners announced plans for the new stadium

St. Helens Town had further great news as they sign-up a lucrative sponsorship

deal with 438 Design, a North-West based marketing and design agency run by

St Helens resident Paul Keen.

Following a difficult diamond jubilee season, in which the club narrowly escaped

relegation, St Helens Town has come out fighting prior to the 2007/2008

campaign. Now about to start its eighth season at Knowsley Road following the

sale of its Hoghton Road ground as part of the partnership with Saints and the

invitation from Saints to form Sporting Club St. Helens the club looks to the

future with renewed vigour.

Speaking yesterday club official, John McKiernan announced a number of new

initiatives in a bid to raise the profile of the club both on and off the field.

"In a town which is rightly dominated by our highly successful rugby league

club counterparts, it has been difficult to establish a large number of regular

followers of the football team both at Knowsley Road and away from home",

said Mr McKiernan.

"During the pre-season period, we plan to get active and encourage people of

the Town to come and give their support", he added.

The club has been applauded in recent years for their commitment to youth

development, actively encouraging local children to get involved in football. This

is something that remains fundamental to the club's long term plans with the

formation of new Under 6's, Under 7's, Under 8's and Under 13 teams, meaning

that the club now works with over 200 local children, ranging in age from age 6

to 14. The senior and junior teams will play a major part in this weekend's

St. Helens Festival.

Off the field the club is planning numerous local marketing activities in order to

kick-off their ambitions.

"In addition to the imminent re-launch of our website and the set up of a new

lottery, we are planning to attract local business sponsorships through a

programme of direct marketing, PR and advertising" said Mr McKiernan.

"The announcement of our new main sponsor is fantastic, 438 Design will

provide a much needed financial boost for the club and will play a major part in

our marketing efforts throughout the season and hopefully beyond, Mr

McKiernan remarked.

"We've got to put the disappointment of last season behind us and look forward

to better things, especially with the new stadium now looking more likely'" he

added.

and amatuer games and feeding back with any findings. He will also assist with
various duties on matchdays.

the club and further our cause during the forthcoming season."
