Tuesday 23rd March Vodkat League Premier DivisionSt Helens Town 0-0 Winsford United On a rainy night in St Helens the slick surface and the heavy pitch colluded to make conditions difficult for both teams and ruin the game as a spectacle for the brave souls who ventured to Knowsley Road . An early chance fell to the hosts in the 6th minutes when a right wing corner broke to Graeme Mitchell but his effort was blocked by a defender and the chance was lost. Moments later Mitchell was again involved when he beat a defender on the right wing before crossing into the box, the visiting stopper fumbled the cross and the ball broke to Mike Scully who looked certain to score but for a well timed block challenge. The home supporters were unimpressed in the 12th minute when Mitchell found Hanley and he shrugged off his defender getting into the box and had his heels clipped as he was through on goal the referee deemed this not to be a foul and play continued. Kevin Woods had to be alert on 13 minutes when Lee Duckworth delivered a ball into the box from the left wing and Craig Hoyland rose to direct it goalwards only for Woods to tip over the bar. Another Winsford chance came in the 18th minute when a loose ball was collected by Andy Kinsey on the edge of the box and he shot wide of the left hand post. Further Town pressure saw a spot of pinball in the Winsford box after 20 minutes, Mitchell sent a ball into the box and Iain Dyson attempted to meet it at the far post, he was nudged but play continued and the ball broke to Scully whose header was spilt by Jason Astbury in the Winsford goal and just evaded Hanley who was loitering with intent. Just before the half hour mark Mitchell got into the box and his initial shot was blocked the rebound broke kindly to him and his second effort suffered the same fate as the first with the loose ball being cleared. Visiting stopper Astbury was again in the action on 35 minutes when a left wing cross from Scully looked to be an easy take but his dropped the cross and the loose ball just evaded the slide of Hanley. With the half drawing to a close Hanley had a header held by Astbury and Winsford drew a save from Woods when Kinsey connected with a free kick from Josh Hancock. In the final stages John Elias started a counter attack and played a one-two Mitchell before sending a cross into the box which broke to Hanley and it required an excellent save from Astbury to stop the striker opening the scoring. With the rain worsening the game became end to end and Town start the goalbound action when Scully’s turn and shot on the edge of the box was held by the keeper. At the other end a poor delivery from a corner almost set up a goal when it broke to Chris Melia and his effort had to be cleared off the line by Elias. A slick Town counter attack after 70 minutes saw Hanley and Dyson link with the latter finding Mitchell on the edge of the box. Mitchell’s subsequent effort failed to trouble the keeper and went just over the bar. Woods was called into action twice in less than a minute as he had to be quick to react to two one on one’s. First a counter attack saw Hancock get into the box and look certain to score but Woods was quick to close him down and extended himself well to block the effort. This was quickly followed by Melia’s chance which again saw Woods deny an excellent opening to the visitor. In added on time at the end of the match Scully had a shot blocked and a couple of Town corners came to nothing and saw the game end in St Helens second 0-0 scoreline of the season. Vodkat League Premier Division Silsden 2-3 St Helens Town 0-1; Rob Hanley 3 Minutes, 1-1; Jamie Longley 8 Minutes, 1-2; Iain Dyson 14 Minutes, 2-2; Daniel McNulty 23 Minutes, 2-3; Graeme Mitchell 44 Minutes. The road trip ended with a third consecutive victory and a first win at Cougar Park on what will be Town’s last visit to the venue. The game had a lightening start when Rob Hanley put the visitors into a 3rd minute lead. The striker latched onto a through ball and sent a well struck shot past the home stopper from 8 yards. The lead was to be short lived as Silsden levelled on 8 minutes. Jordan Baker’s header cannoned off the right hand post and was cleared to the edge of the box where Jamie Longley collected it centrally and returned it with interest past Kevin Woods in the Town goal. Town restored their advantage on 14 minutes, Rob Barraclough’s attempted back pass beat Phil Rishton and Iain Dyson nipped in to poke the ball home from close range. Again the lead was to be short lived as Daniel McNulty caught Ben Kay dwelling on the ball advanced on goal and shot past Woods. Another Town move on 37 minutes when Hanley linked with Brian Hatton and the latter’s cross just evaded Dyson on the far post. At the other end Tim Hird collected a loose ball in a dangerous position but was denied by an excellent block from John Elias. A free kick from Marc Stephens on the left edge of the box saw him get the ball up and down over the wall towards the bottom left hand corner of the net, Rishton extended himself well to keep the effort out. The visitors regained the lead just before the interval when Graeme Mitchell was fouled on the right of the area and he picked himself up to curl an excellent effort over the top of the wall into the top right hand corner of the net. The second half was an anti-climax in relation to the previous period. Early chances saw Hanley beat his marker and feed Hatton who had his effort blocked before Dyson did well on the left and cut inside before turning and shooting at the home stopper. Silsden had a brace of chances to level the scores, Barraclough found Damien Whiteoak with a long ball and the strikers effort went over the bar. This was followed when a counter attack saw Chris Simpson beat a defender and round the goalkeeper only to have his shot cleared off the line by Mike Fargher the ball broke to Jordan Barker and he somehow managed to find the stand behind the goal when he looked certain to score. Town thought they had doubled their lead when after soaking up the period of Silsden pressure they countered down the left wing, Hatton fed Dyson and he in turn released Hanley who beat his marker and on the left hand edge of the box u unleashed an effort that went over Rishton struck the inside of the upright and looked to have crossed the line as it went left to right before being cleared. On 76 minutes Elias made another important intervention as he cut out a dangerous ball into the box from the left wing. At the other end Mitchell found Hanley and he in turn fed Stephens his effort went into the side netting. The final chance of the match fell to the hosts as Jordan Barker advanced down the right and sent his cross into the box which found substitute Dan Riley six yards out but the youngster shot over the bar and the points were Town’s. Vodkat League Premier Division Atherton LR 0-1 St Helens Town 0-1; Iain Dyson 25 Minutes. Town made it back to back wins with a hard fought victory over Atherton LR on an awful surface at Crilly Park this evening. Skipper Dougie Pitts won the toss and decided to attack up the slope in the first half. The early stages showed how the game was going to play out as on a couple of occasions Town worked themselves into good positions only to be thwarted by a bobble from the pitch. The first chance of the match fell to Marc Stephens, Mark Evans did well down the left wing and crossed towards Iain Dyson he fed the ball to Stephens who was better placed on the edge of the box but his effort went the wrong side of the right hand upright. The next chance of any note saw Town take the lead their pressure merited. John Elias won the ball run inside the Atherton half and started a counter attack with a surging run down the right wing his ball into the box was half cleared but fell to Stephens who did not get hold of his shot and it fell kindly to Dyson who controlled it well before finding the right hand corner of the net. Dyson could have doubled his and Town’s tally on 35 minutes when he latched on to Mike Scully’s through ball and getting into the box he beat his defender but an awful bobble saw the chance lost. Just before the interval a long kick from keeper Kevin Woods saw Scully read the bounce well and release Dyson he steered his shot past the advancing goalkeeper but the effort was always rising and went over the bar. The second period saw more of a threat from the hosts and the first effort of the second stanza saw Woods drawn into action as he had to be alert to avert the danger when Rob Smith sent a dangerous free kick into the box. At the other end Scully called the home stopper into action when his effort from 12 yards was parried around the post for a corner from which nothing came. Just after the hour mark Scully linked with Brian Hatton on the left with the latter sending a cross into the box that was cleared to Stephens on the edge of the box and the resultant shot drew a fine save from Martin Pearson, pushing it wide of the left hand post. LR were almost gifted an equaliser on 70 minutes when Woods came out wide to the right of the penalty area to clear a long ball but scuffed his effort straight to Rob Howarth he took his chance and returned the ball goalwards but Woods recovered well to stop the goalbound effort. Woods was called into action again five minutes later when Mark Prince sent a free kick into the box which Matt Smith rose and met heading his effort downwards and the Town stopper extended to keep the effort out. Town looked to get a second and put the result beyond doubt in the late stages. Substitute Graeme Mitchell got into the box and just as he looked to offload his shot Josh Hill nipped in to get a vital touch and take the ball away from him. The last chance of the match fell to Mitchell who latched onto a through ball and this time he got his shot off but Ben Cartwright managed to block the goalbound effort. So one goal had been enough to take the spoils for the visitors and they will now look towards the visit to Yorkshire on Saturday and taking on Silsden at Cougar Park a ground on which Town have yet to record a victory. Saturday 13th March Vodkat League Premier Division Nelson 1-2 St Helens Town 1-0; Luke Hargreaves 34 Minutes, 1-1; Iain Dyson (Penalty) 39 Minutes, 1-2; Iain Dyson (Penalty) 75 Minutes. Town got back to winning ways with a hard fought if not massively dominant performance in completing a double over Nelson. The visitors had an early chance when Mike Scully sent the ball into the box from the right and found Adam Gilchrist at the far post but he could only shoot wide of the left hand upright. Town were dominating proceedings and creating chances Mike Fargher did well on the right and centred for Iain Dyson but he shot over under pressure. Scully looked to have found space in the box when a defender took his standing leg away but play was allowed to continue. Dyson fed Scully on the right with the latter sending in a cross which Daniel Finch had to head away with Dyson in attendance. Town thought they had taken the lead on 18 minutes when a John Elias shot from the edge of the box was deflected into the path of Marc Stephens his shot was also blocked and broke to Gilchrist who drew a parry from Chris Thompson in the Nelson goal Stephens reacted first and chested the loose ball home only to be harshly flagged offside. A rare Nelson foray forward saw Steven Maden try his luck from 25 yards but Kevin Woods was equal to the shot and held it easily. Another Town attack saw Dyson and Gilchrist link on the edge of the box the latter’s shot deflected into the path of Stephens and his shot was blocked behind for a corner. On 34 minutes much against the run of play Nelson took the lead. Mark Evans gave away a free kick near the right touch and somehow Luke Hargreaves’ free kick found its way into the net for a soft goal. The lead was to be short lived for the hosts as a free kick was awarded to Town on the edge of the box which Evans took and it struck an arm in the wall with Mr Holloway pointing to the spot. Dyson stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way levelling the scores. The action was not over as Nelson skipper Finch chose to question the penalty decision and was shown a yellow card and this was not to stop his protestations as he was shown another yellow card some two minutes later and the hosts were reduced to ten men for the remainder of the game. The first action of the second half saw Scully take advantage of a slip by Alex Mugan and he squared to Dyson whose shot went over the bar. At the other end Adam Whiteside attempted a long shot which Woods held before the action at the other end saw Dyson turn and shoot wide of the right hand post from 20 yards. Substitute Brian Hatton drew a save from Thompson after he was found on the left of the area and it was turned behind for a corner. The corner was taken short to Hatton and Dan Hartley had to be alert to take the ball off the head of Scully. Another penalty was awarded to the visitors on 75 minutes when a piece of skill by Stephens in the box saw him felled by Andy Smith and Dyson stepped up to send the keeper the wrong was again to double his and Town’s tally. On 78 minutes Hatton broke into the box but shot into the side netting. Moments later a dangerous ball into the Town box from Chris Clarkson had to be headed away from danger by skipper Dougie Pitts when Ashley Higgins looked to be having a free header. With time running out Scully collected the ball in the Nelson box and beat his defender before unleashing a shot that had Thompson beaten but struck the post and went behind for a goal kick. In added on time Scully fed Elias and he got into the box he had a heavy touch but recovered to get a shot off which Thompson saved at close range. So Town ran out narrow winners against the 10 men of Nelson and will be looking to continue the winning run at Atherton LR on Tuesday evening. Vodkat League Premier Division St Helens Town 1-2 Colne 0-1; Samuel Hayes 5 Minutes, 1-1; Mike Scully 32 Minutes, 1-2; Joe Garvin (Penalty) 58 Minutes. St Helens Town fell to another Tuesday evening defeat and saw a 6th sending off of the season. The hosts had the worst possible start to the match as they went behind in the 5th minute. A left wing corner was sent into the Town box and broke to Martin Brodrick his shot deflected off his own player and cannoned off the right hand post before Sam Hayes reacted first to poke the ball home. A quick response was required and Craig Cunnigham found Phil Mitchell on the edge of the box. His turn and volley went just over the bar. Soon afterwards Ben Kay latched onto a loose ball 20 yards from goal, chesting it into his path before shooting just wide of the right hand post. Colne were causing Town plenty of problems with their flowing football getting the ball down and attacking at pace. One such attack culminated in Brodrick having his attempt deflected and Graeme McCall did well to claim the effort. Town had a great chance to level the scores on 22 minutes when Rob Hanley beat the offside trap and advanced on goal, Bobby Harris in the visitors goal stood up well and when the striker unleashed his shot, Harris was able to keep the effort out. On 25 minutes it took an excellent challenge to stop Colne doubling their advantage. James Crorken advanced and found Hayes in the area a well timed challenge from John Elias took the ball off his foot and when the ball broke back to Crorken he shot wide of the right upright. Less than a minute later McCall was called into action to push Hayes’ effort wide of the target after a left wing cross from Ryan Brereton. The scores were level just half the half hour mark when Hanley found Mike Scully with a pinpoint ball and he controlled the ball before drawing the keeper and slotting home. With the interval fast approaching a left wing corner was sent into the box by Joe Garvin and met by Billy Priestley his header hit the post and was turned away from danger and behind for a corner which came to nothing and the sides went in level at the break. There was a quick start to the second half as first Colne’s attack barely 30 seconds into the half culminated in Brereton shooting wide of the left hand post from the right of the box. Moments later a surging run from Elias saw him get into the Colne area a challenge saw the ball break to Hanley who took advantage getting off his shot which Harris did well to save. The turning point of the game came in the 55th minute when Liam Goggins went on a long run past some poor attempted challenges and into the Town box, McCall’s attempts to claim the ball were deemed to be a foul and a penalty was awarded with McCall being given his marching orders. After a stoppage as Town prepared their substitute goalkeeper Kevin Woods who was brought on at the expense of Phil Mitchell. Colne’s penalty taker Garvin was not perturbed by the stoppage in play and even though Woods guessed the right way his spot kick was far enough into the corner to elude him. The ten men of Town pressed trying to regain parity as the visitors seemed to be content to sit on their advantage. On 65 minutes Mark Evans sent a free kick into the box which Mike Fargher rose to meet but he could only steer his header wide of the target. A couple of minutes later Scully looked to have levelled matters with a miss hit cross from the left which appeared to have beaten Harris in the visitors goal but came down on the wrong side of the crossbar. With Colne content to sit on their advantage and Town looking to make a long ball work for them neither side created much in the final quarter of the contest. The final action of note came in the second minute of added on time when Graeme Mitchell sent a right wing corner dangerously across the six yard box which only needed a touch to turn it home but it was a Colne player who was to have the final say turning the ball away from danger and Town fell to their eleventh defeat of the season. St Helens Town; McCall, Elias, Evans(G.Mitchell 72), Pitts(C), Faulkner, Cunningham(Stephens 65), Kay, Fargher, Hanley, Scully, P.Mitchell(Woods 57). Subs Not Used; Frazer, Hatton.
Saturday 6th March Vodkat League Premier Division New Mills 2-1 St Helens Town 0-1; Rob Hanley 36 Minutes, 1-1; David Swarbrick 44 Minutes, 2-1; Steven Hall 90+2 Minutes. St Helens Town left Derbyshire this afternoon wondering how they lost this match after putting in an awesome shift. Some of the visiting faithful will have arrived at Church Road wondering how many the hosts would win by and when the team news filtered through that in form striker Mike Scully and February player of the month Luke Faulkner were absent and Iain Dyson and Phil Mitchell were rested with Ian Frazer, Craig Cunningham, Graeme Mitchell and Peter Birch elevated to the starting line up the chances look slightly worse. The first clear cut chance fell to the hosts on 26 minutes when an attack down the left saw the ball delivered into the box and an initial effort was blocked, the ball broke to Steven Smith and he was thwarted by an excellent block from Birch. A few minutes later good work by Hanley saw him find Graeme Mitchell on the edge of the box and his effort went just wide of the right hand upright. At the other end a left wing corner eventually found its way to Jamie Baguley and his effort from the edge of the area struck the right hand upright and was cleared. Town opened the scoring on 36 minutes when from an innocuous position in midfield Chris Baguley lost his footing and Frazer took advantage to release Hanley he cushioned the ball into his own path with a header drew the keeper and slotted past him to send the Town fans behind the goal wild with delight. The visitors spurned a chance to double the lead when Mitchell released Hanley with a well weighted ball the advancing keeper just did enough to thwart Haley but the ball broke back to Mitchell the home pitch advantage helped New Mills as the poor surface stopped Mitchell controlling the ball quickly and the chance to shoot at the unguarded goal was lost. The hosts levelled before the interval when a generous free kick was awarded on the left wing but there was no doubt about the finish as Dave Swarbrick took a touch and half volley the ball home. The half time interval saw Hanley replaced by Dyson after he had taken a couple of knocks to the head during a “robust” first period. Town looked to enjoy playing down the hill and created a trio of chances in the opening five minutes after the restart. First Dyson chased a defender down and blocked his clearance into the path of Mitchell he attempted a first time shot and this went just wide of the right post. This was followed by Mitchell collecting a quick throw getting into the box and Ingram-Hughes had to be alert to smother his effort. Marc Stephens rounded off the trio when his curling effort from 25 yards was well held by the home stopper on 50 minutes. Just after the hour mark Graeme McCall was called into action to preserve parity when Swarbrick advanced down the right and crossed to the far post where Jamie Baguley applied a diving header that the visiting stopper reacted well to keep out. Another spell of Town pressure saw Phil Mitchell collect a through ball and he looked to be through on goal but a fine challenge from Daniel Jackson averted the danger. This was followed by a fine piece of vision by Frazer as he found Birch centrally with a long throw and the resultant effort went just over the crossbar. New Mills threatened on 76 minutes when Chris Baguley delivered a right wing free kick into the 6 yard box which John Elias had to head over the crossbar and from the resultant set piece the same player delivered and the ball looked to be curling home but McCall clawed the ball off target and the loose ball was cleared. With time running out and the hosts desperate to gain maximum spoils in what looks like a vain chase of runaway leaders Newcastle Town, they looked to pump the ball long to carve a way through the Town rearguard. With this tactic the game became stretched and Town almost netted a winner. Phil Mitchell had a free kick from the left of the box held by the home custodian and Brain Hatton was released on the left of the box his curling effort looked to have the beating of the keeper as it curled into the top corner of the net but somehow extended himself to push the effort off target Phil Mitchell picked up the loose ball and turned it back into the danger area but the ball was cleared. At the other end a counter attack a ball was delivered from the left across the box and was half cleared but the resultant shot cannoned off the right hand upright and away. Another probing run by Phil Mitchell caused New Mills problems as he got down the left and squared the ball into the six-yard box which Bowler did well to turn away from Hatton. Town were to Chris Baguley’s effort on the right was blocked on the line by Dyson and broke back to him, his second effort was awful but broke kindly for Steven Hall on the opposite side of the box he looked to have taken the ball under control with the use of his hand but no whistle was forthcoming and his diagonal shot found the corner to give the hosts a victory their performance did not merit. New Mills; Ingram-Hughes, Bowler, Innes(C)(Berkley 61), Jackson, Band, C.Baguley, Swarbrick, J.Baguley(Hall 68), Turner, Smith(Monaghan 78), Mather. Subs Not Used; Burke, Fidler. Tuesday 2nd March Vodkat League Premier Division St Helens Town 1-1 Alsager Town 1-0; Mike Scully 52 Minutes, 1-1; Andrew Whitney 86 Minutes. St Helens Town will fell they lost two points rather than gained one this evening after a 1-1 draw with Alsager Town in a game with a degree of late controversy. The first half was a cagey affair with both sides seemingly incapable of stringing more than a couple of passes together. The hosts had an early chance when Phil Mitchell’s individual run culminated in him shooting wide of the left hand upright. Mike Scully was on the end of rare moment of fine football when Mitchell fed Rob Hanley and the hitman advanced to the edge of the box where he picked out Scully who did not get a good contact and he snatched the shot wide of the opposite upright. The half ended with St Helens in the ascendancy, Mitchell sent a free kick over the bar, Ben Kay and Hanley linked with the latter having his shot well saved by Mike Langley in the Alsager goal. Hanley was heavily involved in the action in the latter stages of the half first he sent a dangerous right wing cross into the box which Langley did well to hold down low with Scully in attendance. The hosts were appealing for a penalty when Hanley latched onto a through ball and beat his marker to the ball he appeared to be pushed off the ball in the box but no foul was given and the half ended level. St Helens started the second half well with Scully at the centre of the good work. He tested Langley with a well placed free kick from the edge of the box before collecting a ball from Marc Stephens on the right of the area before executing a fine sand wedge like lob with beat Langley all ends up and put the hosts into a deserved lead. With Alsager rocked St Helens looked to press home their advantage, Hanley found space from a well delivered corner and his effort was blocked and eventually cleared. A rare foray forward by the visitors saw them almost level, Tom Swann sent a left wing cross along the six-yard box and it found it’s way to Dean Williams on the far post but he could only shoot into the side netting. Normal service was resumed as Stephens and Hanley linked with the latter centring for Dyson to shot over the bar from the edge of the box. Mitchell tested Langley from 10 yards with the stopper pushing his effort wide for a corner from the set piece Evans sent a cross towards Hanley and his effort was blocked it broke to Dyson and his effort deflected off a defender onto the right hand upright and broke to Hanley but the flag was raised for offside. At the other end a free kick from Kurtis Gill found Williams unmarked but he could only steer his free header at Graeme McCall and he held the effort. A flowing passing move on 71 minutes saw Scully link with Mitchell he beat a defender on the right of the box and passed to Scully who shot wide of the target when he should have scored. A worrying trend of free headers in the home area was appearing when Steve Warburton sent a ball in from the right and Andrew Whitney could not direct it past McCall. More pressure from the hosts saw a move involving Hanley and Stephens culminate with Dyson having his shot parried and this was followed by Stephens having a free kick from the edge of the box tipped over by Langley. The sucker punch came on 86 minutes when a counter attack saw Wellstead released down the left wing and he sent the ball towards Whitney his effort crept under McCall’s dive into the net. The hosts were lucky to get off the park with a point as a challenge on Adam Wilson by John Elias appeared to be inside the area but a free kick was awarded outside the box and the resultant set piece was cleared. St Helens will have being rueing their missed chances and Alsager will have been thinking what might have been had a penalty been awarded when the truth is the result should have been beyond doubt long before this.
