Saturday 1st MayVodkat League Premier DivisionWinsford United 2-0 St Helens Town1-0; Liam Prince 56 Minutes, 2-0; Josh Hancock 90+4 Minutes.

Town’s penultimate game of the season ended in defeat at the scene of their League Cup Semi-Final exit. There was little action of any note in the early stages as the hosts looked nervous needing a positive result to ensure their Premier Division status for next season and Town in end of season mode. An early move by the visitors saw a quick throw on the left was collected by Rob Hanley and he advanced beating Shaun Came before squaring towards Marc Stephens and his effort was parried by Jason Astbury in the home goal. After 25 minutes Winsford threatened when Chris Melia found Andy Kinsey on the right of the area the strikers shot from the edge of the area was claimed by Graeme McCall at the second attempt. Just before the half hour mark, Mark Evans dispossessed Jack McKay just into the Winsford half and linked with Hanley he in turn found Stephens whose effort was parried and the loose ball was cleared. At the end of the first period Kinsey found space to get off a shot but he could only steer his effort at McCall and he held the shot.  The opening chance of the second stanza fell to the visitors, Ben Kay fed Hanley and as he advanced on goal he was outmuscled by his marker. This was quickly followed by Evans sending a left wing cross into the area which Graeme Mitchell rose highest and met on the far post but he could only head over the bar. The deadlock was broken on 56 minutes when Josh Hancock sent a probing long diagonal ball from the left wing towards the right hand side of the area which evaded Kinsey on the edge of the “D” and was collected by Liam Prince who slotted the ball into the net. Town tried to level matters and on 68 minutes almost did so when Evans’s right wing corner was turned on by Stephens towards Iain Dyson whose effort went just the wrong side of the right hand upright with the keeper beaten. More Town pressure saw a quick well worked throw opening up space for Kay he found Evans in the area but his shot could only find the side netting. With time against the visitors further chances saw Mike Fargher supply a cross to the far post which Kevin Picton met but could not get on target. In added on time Picton collected a though ball and pulled it across the box into the danger area with Adam Bayley having to head the ball away from trouble. The game was to be put to bed late in added on time when Town were caught with a counter attack. A free kick into the Winsford box was cleared and Steve Capper released Hancock using their numerical advantage well the winger stayed composed and rifled the ball home to secure the win and that the hosts will play in the Vodkat League, top flight next season.    Winsford United; Astbury, McKay, Duckworth, Bayley(C), Came, Prince(Bryning 87), Hancock, Capper, McNichol(Jardine 90), Kinsey, Melia(Brandon 62).
